The Montessori handwork curriculum aims to provide an all rounded and complete educational experience to the child. Therefore, the prepared environment also caters to the child’s growing needs and interests in his culture including arts, crafts and handwork.. Its enable the child to discover that hands can be the medium of expression and creativity like sounds (language) and body movement (dancing). The aim is to encourage the child to use hands to create aesthetical pleasant objects which help his creativity and satisfy his inner needs of expression. Handwork helps the child to become a contributing member of his community and a useful citizen of the word.
Handwork and crafts are to have a specific task within the context of the curriculum, namely to awaken creative powers which would find fruitful and useful applications in as many ways as possible in later life and work.
The practicing of handwork is not meant to provide just a pleasant past-time but to specifically help the young child to develop a healthy imagination and harmonies his unfolding will and feeling for life. For the older children, the teenager, the enhancement of these souls faculties will form the basis for an active thinking life.
The reason for this is based on one of the fundamental precepts of true teaching, namely that when we engage the child in physical, practical activity , we are working on the ‘soul spirit nature’ of that children.
Handwork helps children develop better eye- hand coordination . Moreover, the child gains more control over his movements and instruments of his motion become more obedient to his will. Since the children are carrying out purposeful activities and making useful crafts, their confidence and self-esteem improves along with enjoying a great sense of achievement..
Arts and crafts not only help children to recognize and appreciate art, beauty and develop an aesthetic sense but interestingly it also helps them improve their mathematical knowledge. Several handwork activities involves concept like symmetry , asymmetry and accurate measurements for producing a successful end product. Concepts of geometry and arithemetic are reinforced by various handwork projects.
It is more important to encourage children to be creative, however, leaving them alone to experiment with different media without proper guidance will not lead to the best results. The best way to motivate children to create something truly productive is to show them how to utilize the proper tools and the best techniques to use these tools in order to produce a specific piece of art work.
Young children not only desired but are actually absorbing information and knowledge from their environment at a great pace. Their intelligence and ability to grasp the proper techniques in order to carry out specific activities should certainly.
There is no limit to what type of handwork may be introduced to the child . Any technique from the world’s cultural heritage may be introduced to the child starting from simpler activities and gradually moving on to more complex one.
It is helpful and interesting to tell children stories of some of the great artists and get them to realize how each of those artists had to learn everything from the very beginning before they could create great works of arts.
Throughout the study of hand work, inspire children by showing them beautiful examples from throughout the world, linking their own personal experience with creative expression of people from many different cultures.
Books on the topic of arts should also be included in the classrooms book corner. Trips to museums and art galleries should also be arranged for the children to see real objects of arts from different cultures and how these pieces of art can be displayed.
True education aims to serve the needs of the whole human being.. Handwork and crafts activities not only serve to educate the children in the nature and process involved with the different materials, the use of tools and equipment . but there is also inherent the therapeutic aspect from which the children benefit.
In addition to the educational and formative benefit that crafts can offer there is the definite element of manual skills training and for the older children a useful introduction to an experience of real work.
In many conventional schools unfortunately, ignored the significance of handwork. The ability to read and write is given preference to such an extend that other fields of learning get ignored. Intelligence being considered to be synonymous with the ability to read and write, while the other abilities and skills are overlooked as being secondary or no value. It is extremely disappointing attitude which limits the child’s true potential and restrict wholesome development..
