Q1: Write a note on Montessori  Cosmic Education and how it can be introduced during the early childhood years.

             Answer No 1

Cosmic Education  is founded on the philosophy of Maria Montessori. At, its core, Cosmic  Education  tells the story of the  interconnection and  interdependence of all elements  of the universe. It describe the role of  education as  comprehensive, holistic and purposeful, to encompass  the development of the whole person with in the context of the universe.

She believed that Cosmic Education was vital  to early  education because it provides children  with a frame work  to understand  their world  and their place  within  it. Children learn to  respect  of the  past, developing an understanding of ethics, and value the  contribution of others.  Cosmic Education teaches children to become  aware of interdependence of all the thing, and develop a sense of gratitude that comes from the awareness.

In Montessori classrooms, Cosmic education  forms a platform  for   children to understand  and adapt to their environment. At  pre-school level , Cosmic Education  introduces the child  to the natural world through experiences with  nature and sensorial learning materials. These experiences teach the children to refine their senses and they experience and understand their world. These skill help’s the child’s development, and  confidence  with themselves, their society and world as a whole.

The aim of education  is the development of  the total  personality, not of  independent functions. She held a  holistic view of development. A proper environment is essential to the development of the child. Learning material should be provided  to the children through  they  work freely and independently.

Montessori believed that  everyone has a role  the cosmic  order  and that  the  role  of the child is to be educated in the best way

Cosmic Education  refers for  integration and coordination  of all the elements of  a curriculum in order  to achieve  holistic  learning. The child  must be  educated  about his cosmic role. When he / she understand that everything is connected and harm to one element of nature   means harm to  himself or the whole world, that realization become the children a human. It fills joyfulness and calmness in the children.

She believed that  children who received  a Cosmic Education in childhood  were better prepared to entered  adolescence   as independent, socially,  responsible and  emotionally individuals. Its provide s children with a deep understanding  of their moral responsibility  to address the  global issues that affect the humankind and the environment.

She  believed that  the world was  a purposeful place  and the war, poverty and injustice were deviation  from that purpose. Cosmic Education is a way to  restore  harmony and  order which allow the human being to realize  their true potential.

COSMIC EDUCATION IN EARLY CHILDHOOD (3 TO 6 YEARS):

Children 3-6 years old are very  much absorbed in experiencing  their immediate environment. These children feel  close to  connected with the natural  world. To  lay the ground work  foe cosmic education, it is enough for teachers  to ensure that  children experience nature as much as possible  and retain their connection with the natural world.

To help  the children  retain their connection with  nature and to appeal  to their  developing  sense, the Montessori equipment, materials and activities involve as much as  possible natural materials like wood, plants water and sand etc. While teachers and students work with them , teacher can link the materials to their  origin. For example, while working  with baric tablets the directress can describe that the  three different types of  tablets are made up of three different kinds of woods, which come from three different kinds of trees. At the same time,  teachers can  indicate the role of  human beings  in the collection and production of materials.

The most effective  way to go with  young children  is to provide  the opportunity  for them to engage  in purposeful  activities which will lead to the development of those cosmic functions. Emphasis is laid on  making the student  think about themselves and their actions how  it actually  is linked up with others around the world.

Outdoor  activities  can be made  an integral part of the day’s schedule as this helps the children  realize how  everything in the universe  connected to each other. Many different kinds of activities can be practiced by the students. For instance,  the teacher can plan to plant flowers or vegetables in the  school garden.

Many schools around the globe  organize   both outdoor and indoor events  to celebrate a particular  season. Special  activities  are conducted during these  events  which help the students   develop and refine  their cosmic sense.

In a Montessori environment, the directress should  arrange  some activities  in which multiple  participants  can take part to make it successful.

Always  giving the children  the opportunity to choose what they are  ready for,  teachers can  also gently encourage children to work  together occasionally on projects that required more than  one person to complete project such as  acting out a play.

Q2: Discuss Montessori peace program and its importance.

             Answer No 2

Dr. Montessori  recognized children  as the redeeming  factor in the  evolution  of humankind. The peace place is a  designated space in the environment  where children can  go to take  a moment, calm themselves and work out a problem in a peaceful way.

She believed that  her system  would  bring world peace and cause  complete human regeneration. She emphasis the need  to a have a broad prospective  and sheer  determination  in order  to bring world  peace. As everything in the universe is interconnected, untiring  peace efforts are  required in all aspects of life to bring  worldly peace. The existing  bonds between people, different communities and cultures and the relationship between man and the environment  must be directed  to a peaceful path. Ignoring or misusing of any  such connection at any level  may lead to arguments, conflicts, degradation of the environment and war.

To commit to the creation  of a peaceful world. The central  message of  cosmic education  that the universe is a unified whole of interdependence and interrelationship. To help child realize the power and responsibilities of each person , The Montessori curriculum stresses the integrity  of all of  life. Through their studies , students  see that  individuals, communities and nations have changed the  world before  and will again, but it is only when  the spirit of peace  pervades their efforts that the result s are  for the better. One of the major goal  of  cosmic  education is that  seeking peace  is the task chosen by Montessori students as they take their role in the society.

Students need to learn, practice and develop skills in order to put that approach into action . A Montessori  education seeks to teach  students, through daily activities  in the classrooms, the skills to become peacemakers, people  committed to working  toward peace, understanding and non- violent ways of reducing conflict.   Giving  students opportunities to see their own abilities develop  is the surest way  to make students confident  that they can  make a difference in the world. As teachers everyone  places an important role  in inspiring  students and modeling  peace behavior that the students need to learn.

Directress presents a balanced understanding  of the universe  to the child, which then naturally leads the child into peace ways.  Directress needs to inculcate peace in the environment and  the children need to practice as well as possible  and develop  skills which leads the peace in universe.

Peace is a behavior that encourage harmony  in the way  people talk, listen  and interact with each other  and discourage actions to hurt, harm or destroy each other. Thus peace can be  interpreted in many ways  such as happiness, health, contentment, serenity, freedom of expression, justice, purposeful work and availability of opportunities for self growth.

Holistic  approach to peace would involve each and every aspect of human existence that  may effect  the beauty of existence. It can be easily   related to three basic sources; inner peace, social peace and peace in nature. Inner peace refer to peace with oneself. It may include harmony in  thoughts , joy, absence of guilt, sense of gratitude and positive feelings. Social peace refers  to peace with other  human beings and may include harmony  at all levels of human relationships, absence of conflict , love, friendship, brotherhood , cooperation, acceptance of social values and obeying the rules. Peace of nature refers with the peace of the earth and all its elements. Conservation, recycling, planting more trees, love and respect of all the forms of life , love to nature and cutting out all the elements which harms the nature..

Q3: Write a comprehensive note on Montessori peace flower model and it’s constituent four petals.

             Answer No 3

Montessori peace program revolves around  The Peace flower Model which embraces the  three basic sources like Inner peace, social peace and peace with nature. The Peace Flower  diagram provides  a simple , concrete framework upon which Montessori teachers and parents can focus on. Which  Guides them to organize and structure their peace activities The  Peace Flower models presents four types of awareness which an  individual  needs to have in order  to protect  and maintain peace in environment through  its petals..

A flower is used in a Montessori system to present peace  model because the flower  symbolizes  love  and beauty in  many cultures and  it is also delicate and sensitive which can be harm easily just like  peace.

The Peace Flower  consist  of four petals which are:

·         Self- Awareness

·         Community Awareness

·         Culture Awareness

·         Environmental Awareness

At the core of each  of these  elements  is a consciousness  of and respect  for its  essential  nature spirits. Each aspect   of peace education  can be seen as a  petal of  flower  whose center  is sprit. Each  petal touches  or overlaps the  other three, symbolizing  their  interrelatedness.  The more  conscious  we become of  the essential  nature or spirit of ourselves, others, other cultures and  the environment the more respectful and thus peaceful we will become.

Embedded  in the basic  Montessori  approach  to education are  the seeds of all four aspects of peace education. In addition, there are  activities and lessons  that can be added in each of the  areas to deepen the  awareness of peace among both the adults and the adults and children.

It is important that we  study each aspect of peace education and consciously  determine  what we can bring to our classrooms each day to ensure  that our children have a deep love and respect for themselves, other people, cultures and their environment.

Ø  SELF AWARENESS:

Self  Awareness  refers to bring  aware of what actually  someone is feeling, thinking and how they are behaving. Self awareness activities  bring greater understanding and appreciation  of the beauty , characteristics and talents within each  child. These activities  help the children  connect the dynamic center of balance within themselves and increase  dramatically their sense of  well- being  and self confidence  as they learn to identify their  spirit within.  Complete self awareness includes awareness in body, mind, emotions and spirits of oneself.

A community  or a culture cannot be peaceful  unless the individuals that make it up  are thoughtful, calm, loving, caring and peaceful.  The level of peacefulness in a community or culture depends  directly on the level of peacefulness of its member.

Ø  COMMUNITY AWARENESS:

The second petal of Montessori Peace Flower is  devoted to developing community awareness. It means  that someone is aware of the rights of other people in the community. Community awareness activities  brings  greater sensitivity  and  understanding of others  and facilitate  the interpersonal  relationships between them . This includes  family members, friends, classmates, neighbors  and  any individual one meets on a  daily basis . Some of  the areas that  relate directly are  trust,  openness, realization and interdependence.  The sense of being a part of the community and realization interdependence  help the child to  have a glimpse of the unity of things. It also helps the children gain trust, realization, openness and interdependence.

Ø  CU;TURAL AWARENESS:

Cultural studies are an important part of  Montessori  education  at all levels.  Cultural  awareness is based  even on  a broader perspective of  peace  education which includes being aware of  and appreciate the differences in people religion’s, attitudes, beliefs, practices, customs  and social behavior. Through cultural activities   children explore traditions and customs of cultures throughout the world. The study of history familiarize children with how small groups of people  developed into advanced civilizations and cultures.. the children also have experiences  regarding  how geography, land forms and weather of a region influenced development of cultures in various parts of the world.

Ø  ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS:

This petal of the peace flower model refers to the  fact that  someone is aware of the earth’s needs to  stay well and how individuals, communities and cultures treats the earth. Learning to be sensitive  to the needs of the earth’s  environment  and live harmoniously with them is essential to world peace.  Areas of  focus include attention  to the  needs of  the soil, water, air, plants and animals, science experiments, sensitivity to the delicate balance of  the environment, projects  to help the environment.

As we are linked up with earth cycles, be it breathing, drinking, eating, living or dying. By corrupting the earth we will just destroy ourselves.

v  INTODUCING THE PEACE FLOWER:

There are many forms and layers of peace. To think about  what peace is and how  it can be practiced means  analyzing  possibilities  for its applications. The peace flower  diagram provides a simple, concrete framework upon which  Montessori teachers and parents can focus on.

The Peace Flower, there are four petals include are Self- Awareness, Community awareness, cultural  Awareness and Environmental Awareness.

v  CREATING A PEACE PLACE:

Place is a goal that can  only be attained through common accord and the means to achieve this unity for  peace  are two unfold: first, an immediate effort  to resolve conflicts without resource to violence  and second, a long  term efforts to establish a lasting peace among mankind.

Peace place is a place designated area inside or outside  Montessori classrooms, that are used to resolve conflicts among students or teachers and students. It is also used when somebody just needs to sit silent, relax or be alone.

v  SOMETHING GOOD I HAVE DONE:

The purpose of this activity  to enable child to realize the importance of good deeds to others. To encourage  them to develop the  habits of doing good. Instead of given too much lecture, prepare such kind of activities which engage them to feel  it , through which they feel  happier and doing more confidential . Tells  them while living in a community  we should be generous at doing good to other. It makes people happy  gives you joy and contentment. Doing good  things strengthens the  bonds between the community members and makes the world a better place.

v  PRACTICING CONFLICT RESOLUTION:

For this reason most lessons and research projects in  the elementary classroom are done in pairs or groups. Each day  the community setting of classroom allows children  to practice social skills necessary to carry out their task by delegating work , sharing resources and material, making group decision, taking responsibilities for action. Conflict is not  uncommon but  the motivation to resolve it comes from the children.

v  SAVING WATER:

The purpose of this to realize the importance of water and also learn  the ways of saving water.

The child is endowed with unknown powers, which can guide us to  better future if what we really want is a new world, then education must  take as its aim the development of these hidden possibilities.

In the Montessori classrooms activities  using the globe and land and water forms material can be introduced to familiarize students with the geography  and vocabulary of various  water forms around the world  These activities can then  be extended to prompt discussion about the importance of water in our daily lives, then further discussion about the importance of clean  and healthy water. Activities such as  the water cycle and those   covering the earth’s hydrosphere  and take on new meaning in  the context  of water conservancy.
