GDB Question:

Davis Burge once said, ‘Yes, English can be a weird language. It can be understood through tough thorough thought, though.’ How far do you agree with David Burge? Share similar instances from your experience of learning English.

Solution:

According to David Burge, even though English can seem a strange language, it can be grasped with some thought and effort. The sentence Burge constructed highlights some of these complexities, such as the words “through”, "tough," "thorough," "thought," and "though," which share similar spellings but have different pronunciations.

I agree with Burge, because English does have distinctive features and irregularities that can make it difficult to learn and understand. However, with commitment and a systematic approach, one may certainly obtain a decent understanding of the language.

Learners of English face a number of challenges, including inconsistent verb tenses, unpredictable spelling patterns, homophones, silent letters, and deviations to grammar rules. Predicting pronunciation, interpreting meanings, and understanding grammar ideas can all be made challenging by these factors. As a result, it might be difficult for non-native English speakers to learn the language.

Example:

·       There are many words in English that share a similar sound but differ in their spelling and meaning. For example, "two," "to," and "too." Despite having the same pronunciation, they are used in sentences in different ways.

·       English verb tenses can be challenging due to irregular forms. For example, the past tense of "go" is "went," which doesn't follow the typical "-ed" pattern seen in regular verbs.

The structure and vocabulary of English also offer certain advantages. English has a rich vocabulary and is able to communicate complex ideas because it borrows terms from many different languages.  Its adaptability enables original thought and the creation of new words. One can manage the complexities of English and get a solid command of the language by realizing these complexities, approaching learning patiently, and making use of the tools available.

ABC corporation, a leading consulting firm, is in the process of hiring a new team member for their client relations department. The hiring manager is conducting interviews with several candidates. As the interviews progress the manager finds that he is particularly impressed by candidates who have graduated from prestigious universities. He believes that attending such institutions indicate a high level of intelligence, competence and potential for success. Consequently, he unconsciously prioritizes candidates who have attended prestigious universities which may impact his overall evaluation and decision-making.

Question:

Identify the type of potential bias that may be influencing the manager’s evaluation of candidates. Support your answer with logical reasoning.

Solution:

The type of potential bias that may be influencing the hiring manager's evaluation of candidates is the "Halo Effect."

Logical reason:

·        The manager's assessment of the candidates as a whole is influenced by a judgment made based on a particular characteristic (university attended). The management believes that these candidates have a high level of intelligence, competence, and success potential.

·        The halo effect biases the hiring manager's judgment by favouring applicants from prominent universities over those who are equally qualified. Other significant criteria that should be taken into account in the evaluation, such as applicable experience, talents, and personal traits, may be overshadowed by the favourable impression created by the prestigious educational background. As a result, without thoroughly considering their suitability for the client relations role, the manager can unintentionally prefer applicants from famous universities.

·        The manager may ignore valuable talents, experiences, and traits possessed by candidates from non-prestigious institutions if they place too much emphasis on the reputation of the educational institution. Due to this bias, highly competent applicants who might contribute a variety of perspectives and skills to the client relations department are potentially excluded from consideration under the evaluation criteria.
